Sunset Cinema

Kings Park & Botanic Gardens : 1999-2006

Sunset Cinema was founded by David Chitty after the Kinds Park board approved the concept of attracting visitors to an under-utilised part of the park for nature based experiences. As such the Cinema was very simple in terms of infrastructure and tapped into the West Aust outdoor lifestyle culture that had previously lacked unique offerings and experiences such as outdoor movies on picnic rugs in Kings Park. It was an instant hit from the opening night, with numbers building to over 100,000 people over the summer.

Sunset Cinema evolved the unique picnic rug in a park movie experience into catering and ,licensing for attendess, and providing entertainment prior to Sunset with live Jazz bands prior to classic movies, DJ’s playing before cult classics . The increased ticket prices for these experiences didn’t hinder attendance and soon the Cinema was attracting sponsorship from major companies including principal partnerships with he likes of Commonwealth Bank.

Bolstered by the success of software Sunset Cinema, which also operated at caves House in Yallingup in the early years, Sunset expanded to Brisbane Botanic Gardens. Susnet Cinema was eventually sold to Moonlight Cinema and remains today. In the last few years under the pioneering Susnet Cinema name, Sunset events was born as the special events with music before film grew into concerts at the Pioneer Woman’s memorial , which continued evolving concerts experiences into festivals like West Coast Blues & Roots Festival, which soon grew out of Kings park and with it the Sunset brand expanded around the state.
